Allow me to introduce the latest addition to my Monsters series: Popping Monster – Sun Kim!!! Sun is not only a talented dancer with legendary popping skills, but also a dance instructor, and a choreographer! Not content with conquering events such as: Step Ya Game Up 2014, Book of styles 2014, and Immortal Street Dance battle 2013. Sun has also appeared in commercials, music videos, and has even taught a Popping workshop at Princeton University.
Sun is currently preparing for Who You Are, an innovative and experimental “Expressive Dance Performance” which she is also art directing. Who You Are is aimed at encouraging people to find their “true [selves], [protect] it from unwanted influences, and [cultivate] its beauty.” This performance will combine, and abstract elements of “Contemporary [dance], Break Dance, Ballet, Acting, Photography, Videography and Visual Art to deliver a unique message of individuality.” Click here for more details and to purchase tickets!!!
It took me longer than usual to finish Sun’s set. In part, because it was a tricky balancing the production and promotion modes of my brain while running my crowd funding campaign, but also because I had much more material to work with for this shoot. Typically I walk away from a BBoy Monster type shoot with about 3-5 images to really work on. For this set with Sun however, I had 10-12 pictures!!! I hope that’s a sign that I’m actually becoming a better photographer, but personally I think I probably just had an awesome subject to work with.
