Chasing Magritte is about wanting to emulate your heroes, as well as my homage to the turn of the century Surrealist painter Rene Magritte.

It’s probably no secret by now, but in case you didn’t know, that I’m a huge Magritte fan. Dali might be the poster boy for Surrealism, but there’s something about Magritte’s work that I’ve always been more drawn to. I don’t know if it’s his wit, or just because he’s more subtle. But there’s something about his work has always stuck in my mind in a way few works of art have.

In Chasing Magritte, the floating bowler hat (technically a derby) is meant to be symbolic of the artist, as well as his status within art history. I chose to use a bowler hat, because Magritte was frequently depicted sporting one in his paintings and photographs. The other figures reaching for the hat represent my hopes and dreams of someday reaching his level.
